Program Description

The MDS-AOS Dysautonomia and Sleep in Movement Disorders Online Course is a two-day course that aims to address two of the most disabling yet under-recognized groups of non-motor problems in Parkinson's disease and related disorders: autonomic dysfunction (dysautonomia) and sleep disturbance.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

1. Describe the clinical features of dysautonomia in Parkinson’s disease and related disorders and use autonomic red flags to support the diagnosis of multiple system atrophy

2. Apply a stepwise approach to the management of orthostatic hypotension and other autonomic symptoms, including non-pharmacological measures and appropriate drug therapy

3. Select and interpret autonomic and sleep investigations and recognize when specialist referral is required

4. Diagnose and manage the major sleep disorders of Parkinson’s disease, including insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, REM sleep behavior disorder, restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movements

5. Adjust night-time dopaminergic therapy to improve sleep, nocturnal pain and motor control while minimizing adverse effects

This activity is intended for movement disorders specialists, general neurologists, primary care clinicians, movement disorders fellows, neurology residents, and nurses.
