Program Description

The MDS-PAS School on Neuromodulation for Movement Disorders - Presented in Portuguese, is a half-day course focusing on case discussion and faculty opinions on clinical situations with different levels of complexity, encompassing many aspects of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) treatment for Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and tremor. This is a unique opportunity for an overview on current neuromodulation techniques with a particular emphasis on patient management and programming sessions in a live environment.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity learners will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the selection process of candidates for deep brain stimulation in Parkinson’s disease, for dystonia and essential tremor.
2. Explain surgical strategies and target selection in DBS for movement disorders.
3. Assess initial programming and the different electrical stimulation parameters in patients with Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and essential tremor.
4. Recognize potential complications of DBS (surgical, hardware and chronic programming).
5. Outline troubleshooting strategies for gait and dyskinesia following DBS surgery in Parkinson’s disease.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for movement disorder specialists, neurologists with interest in movement disorders, functional neurosurgeons, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists and other health-allied personnel, and trainees who have interest in deep brain stimulation and want to strengthen their knowledge in this field.
