Course Purpose

The primary purpose of this course is to improve the nursing and allied health management of patients with Parkinson's disease. This three day course will feature relevant topics including the Epidemiology of Parkinson’s Disease in Sub-Saharan Africa, local availability and sustainability of oral & non-oral medication, and setting up patient support groups in Africa. The role of Parkinson’s disease Nurses and multi-disciplinary team approach in managing Parkinson’s disease and related conditions will also be emphasized. This course is ideal for nurses who work within the field of neurology, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

Non-Members: $50 USD

*Non-members from the MDS-Africa region can apply for a FREE No-Fee membership with MDS and register for this course at no cost. Must apply for membership no later than 2 weeks in advance of the session in order to receive MDS Member rate.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize the clinical presentation, management and progression of Parkinson’s disease
2. Identify and explain the management of both motor and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease
3. Describe treatment and management approaches throughout the four stages of the disease trajectory
4. Identify and differentiate between pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in Parkinson’s disease
5. Critically discuss the role of the PDNS in the management of Parkinson’s disease-related conditions
6. Understand the difference in roles of the multi-disciplinary team members in managing Parkinson’s disease

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Physio/Physical Therapists, Occupational, Speech Therapists, Movement Disorder Specialists and other health professionals.
