Program Description

The MDS-European Section School on Neuromodulation for Movement Disorders gives a unique opportunity to receive an overview of neuromodulation techniques with hands-on sessions, particularly deep brain stimulation (DBS). Students will attend lectures and panel discussions with question and answer sessions in the morning. They will also attend hand-on sessions dealing with the programming of CE-marked DBS systems, surgical planning, postoperative lead location, and visualized programming. . Also, see how to program and follow real patients with DBS, and engage in a constructive discussion with the international experts. Topics will focus on all aspects of surgery for Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, tremor, and children with movement disorders.

Additionally, lectures will be posted as they are received from the program faculty. Lectures will remain available for 60 days post-course. Some lectures may not be available

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Provide an overview of surgery for movement disorders patients, including mechanisms of action, basics in surgical techniques, and intraoperative micro recording 
  2. Evaluate the criteria and the available tools for selection for DBS surgery in movement disorders patients 
  3. Discuss the different outcomes of DBS in movement disorders patients 
  4. Familiarization with the bases of DBS programming in the different movement disorders 
  5. Understand how to manage the most common side effects of DBS and medication in the short- and long-term follow-up using a multidisciplinary approach

Course Description

The MDS-European Section School on Neuromodulation for Movement Disorders gives a unique opportunity for neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses and other allied health personnel to receive an overview on neuromodulation techniques with hands-on sessions, in particular concerning deep brain stimulation (DBS). Students will attend lectures and panel discussions with question and answer sessions in the morning. They will also attend hand-on sessions dealing with the programming of CE marked DBS systems, surgical planning, and postoperative lead location and visualized programming. Students will also see how to program and follow real patients with DBS, and engage in a constructive discussion with the international experts. Topics will focus on all aspects of surgery for Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, tremor and children with movement disorders.
