Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

1. Define clinical characteristics of Parkinson's disease and functional movement disorders

2. Identify motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease and functional movement disorders relevant to physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and clinical neuropsychology

3. Describe and design relevant profession- and disease-specific assessment tools and general principles of treatment

4. Implement an evidence-based approach to treatment

5. Develop an action plan for implementing and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and multidisciplinary setting

Course Description

Parkinson's disease and Functional movement disorders are common in movement disorders clinics. There is growing evidence that allied health care is an essential part of the management of these conditions: in Functional movement disorders, it is the first-line treatment in most cases. In PD, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and clinical neuropsychology address many pharmacologically difficult to treat symptoms such as speech and swallowing impairment, difficulties with gait, balance and posture, as well as cognitive impairment and many others. Moreover, there is evidence for a possible disease-modifying effect of certain forms of exercise in PD. In each case, however, specific assessment and treatment principles have to be followed, and a multidisciplinary approach is required which is yet to be implemented in many countries. In functional movement disorders, following specific recommendations regarding diagnostic explanation and communication with the patient is essential.

Therefore, this two-day regional in-person course presents an opportunity for healthcare professionals interested in movement disorders to acquire these skills through overview lectures, case discussions, workshops and panel discussions.

The primary purpose of this course is to improve skills in clinical assessment and treatment of Parkinson's disease and Functional movement disorders, since insufficient skills prevent allied health care professionals from providing appropriate and multidisciplinary care.

Course Check-In

Course check-in will begin at 8:15 on Friday, November 3. Please enter using the main entrance of the building; the check-in desk is located outside Main Lecture Hall. There will be signs directing you to the meeting space. Lectures will begin promptly at 8:45.

Course Catering

Coffee breaks and lunch will be served on Friday and Saturday. There will also be a group dinner on Friday evening beginning at 18:30 at the location noted below. There will be a break between the end of lectures and dinner.
