Program Description

Led by internationally recognized movement disorder experts, the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society's Pan American Section (MDS-PAS) 8th Annual Movement Disorders School for Neurology Residents offers a broad education on movement disorders, the latest research and potential career paths in the field. The goal of the course is to provide in-depth education on movement disorders and encourage neurology residents to consider specializing in the field.

Course Purpose

The primary purpose of this course is to provide information on Parkinson's disease, atypical Parkinsonism, advances in management of tremor, the spectrum of dystonia and botulinum toxins, the surgical management of movement disorders redefining Parkinson’s disease, new treatments for tics and tardive disorders and more.

 

Led by internationally recognized movement disorder experts, the program provides:
- Didactic lectures and panel discussions with interactive question-and-answer sessions 
- Review of case studies and engage in a differential diagnosis exercise with the international experts
- Small groups of live patient consultation rounds with the experts (a highlight of the course)
- Meet the experts as they share how they became movement disorders specialists 
- An opportunity for participants to submit patient video case presentation for a video competition (cases are submitted prior to the course)

 

Participants will also have access to additional MDS online lectures, within the MDS Education Roadmap on: basal ganglia physiology, serving under-represented communities and sleep disturbances in Parkinson’s disease.

 

A highlight of the course is the patient clinical rounds where experts examine patients with different types of movement disorders.

Participant Video Case Competition
In addition, students are encouraged to submit their own patient case presentation, prior to the course, to be considered for the video case competition. This session will provide an opportunity for students to hear how the panel of experts evaluate cases. Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

1. Examine a patient with a movement disorder

2. Reach a diagnosis on straightforward movement disorders cases

3. Propose a differential diagnosis on more complex movement disorders patients

4. Present a movement disorders case history

5. Design, review and modify a patient treatment plan

Intended Audience

Intended Audience

General neurology residents (first-year interns, second-year and third-year) who are undecided in a sub-specialty and would like to learn about movement disorders.

Application Requirements
Only individuals residing in the MDS Pan American Section can apply, with prioritization given to those that reside within the United States and Canada.

Eligible individuals are required to complete and submit the course application before September 6, 2023 at 11:59 PM US CDT.

*Individuals who previously attended this school in person between 2016-2022 are ineligible. 

 

Support for Selected Participants Residing in the US or Canada

Selected participants will receive complimentary registration, round-trip coach airfare and hotel accommodations. Airfare booking is done by the MDS Secretariat.


Participants Residing Outside US & Canada, and within the Pan American Region
 A registration fee of $100 USD and all other travel-associated expenses are the responsibility of the individual. A limited number of travel grants are available to those residing in Latin America. The travel grant is a reimbursable grant and no funds are provided before the event.
