Program Description

The Principles of Movement Disorders course is a three-day program for physicians and allied health professionals. The first ever MDS course in Kenya aims to provide an overview of movement disorders diagnosis, treatment and care during joint and individualized sessions for health professionals of Eastern Africa.

Course Purpose

The course features joint lectures on diagnosis and management (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) and multidisciplinary care of Movement Disorders. Individualized physician education will feature lectures on differential diagnoses while the allied health professional sessions will focus on community care and support, and local health beliefs. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet local patients to gain an insight into what living with Parkinson’s disease is like.


Registration Fees:

Members: $25 USD

Non Members: $150 USD

*Non-members wishing to apply for MDS Membership to receive the MDS Member rate for this course will need to apply for membership no later than 2 weeks in advance of session.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity learners will be able to:


1. Improve the diagnosis, and differential diagnosis, of movement disorders

2. Know the appropriate use of locally available, and affordable medication for movement disorders

3. Recognize the clinical presentation, management and progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD)

3. Describe treatment and management approaches throughout the four stages of the disease trajectory

4. Understand the pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in Parkinson’s disease (PD)

5. Critically discuss the role of Allied Health Professionals in the management of PD-related conditions

6. Understand the difference in roles of the multi-disciplinary team members in managing Parkinson’s disease (PD)

This activity is intended for: clinicians and allied health professionals working with Movement Disorders patients.
