Program Description

The MDS-PAS Translating Science into Solutions for Movement Disorders course will provide movement disorders trainees and early career investigators with a unique and highly interactive educational opportunity in which they will learn about the applications of multiple research methodologies to translational research, apply their scientific presentation skills, and obtain career development advice. In addition, the course will allow: clinical researchers to gain exposure to laboratory techniques, ‘wet bench’ basic scientists to gain exposure to research approaches involving people with movement disorders, and clinical researchers and basic scientists to network and explore opportunities for collaboration.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the applications of common or advanced methodologies in genetics, model systems, electrophysiology, neuroimaging, and clinical cohort development in translational movement disorders research
  2. Develop and refine oral or poster presentation skills to effectively communicate scientific findings to an audience of varied backgrounds (e.g., basic scientists, clinical researchers)  
  3. Recognize challenges faced by early investigators and potential solutions related to obtaining grant funding, managing research personnel, and developing relationships with mentors and collaborators
